Water-Wise Gardening
Moving from Upstate NY to Texas has certainly taken some getting used to. Coming from a town with a population of a mere 7,000 people to a bustling city in North Texas was a culture shock to say the least. But when the weather turned warm after an unusually cold winter I was beginning to appreciate the change in climate at least. Wearing shorts and tee shirts in late February was something I definitely could get used to. And early, mild springs meant early planting as well. When I decided to plant some vegetables in a raised bed I thought I'd do a minimal amount of work and be enjoying a tossed salad in no time. But there were some challenges to gardening here to be sure.
Aside from the wider array of garden pests that seem to be so prevalent here in the south I found that the arid climate was a challenge. Sure I knew enough to water my plants in the morning and again at night. But I often noticed they looked a bit parched during the day despite this. And what if I was out for the day? Or if I was gone for a weekend? Would I come home to find my green babies wilted and shriveled? The extreme heat and lack of rainfall was going to be the end of my garden in no time. But I did find some ways to help alleviate some of the moisture issues and improve my chances of enjoying a successful garden.
I've found mulching to be an excellent way to maintain moisture in the soil around my plants. Now I know most people have seen the "pretty", shredded bark mulch in their neighborhood do-it-yourself stores. I'm talking about the kind that comes in colors and is used mainly for beautifying a garden. It's a tad pricey and not really necessary for many types of gardening. You can make your own mulch for a fraction of the cost (or even free). When we first moved into our current home, the former residents had allowed the leaves to accumulate something awful in the yard. But when we were finally done raking it away our efforts were rewarded with some gorgeous, rich soil ripe for planting. Thank you lazy former residents! Leaves, pine needles, newspaper and hay can all be used to retain moisture while suppressing weeds.
I never rake the grass clippings after mowing the lawn. Not because I'm lazy, but because it's an excellent way to recycle nutrients back into the soil. If you leave grass clippings on your lawn throughout the year it will actually amount to about one annual fertilizer application. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn also helps shade the soil which in turn keeps the roots cooler and reduces moisture loss. Hence less watering. You'll want to mow more than once a week, however, as short grass clippings decompose more quickly.
Soaker hoses are an excellent way to make sure your garden is getting the water it needs to grow and thrive. This is known as drip irrigation. Soaker hoses are typically made of rubber and should be kept to a length of 50 feet or less. Longer than that can result in uneven water distribution. They should be placed on top of the soil and not buried under it in either straight lines or snaked through garden beds. New soaker hoses can be a bit stiff or stubbornly curl up, but can be tamed nicely with u-shaped landscaping pins. A nice finishing layer of mulch does double duty by giving a finished look while serving to further retain moisture. You can also make your own soaker hose from a used garden hose. Just poke small holes about 1 to 2 inches apart with a large safety pin or by using a drill with a small bit. Be sure to poke holes on one side of the hose only and allow 4 to 6 inches with no holes at the each end of the hose. Place a plastic or metal cap on one end of the hose and attach the other end to your water spigot. Put the water on low and check to be sure the flow from the holes is at a trickle.
The types of plants you choose can mean the difference between a successful garden and heartbreaking failure. Researching and planting drought resistant varieties can greatly reduce watering. While you could fill your garden with cactus plants, succulents and rocks, there is a wide variety of plants that don't require a great deal of watering. In fact, in an effort to reduce excessive water use, the Texas Agricultural Extension Service is attempting to educate Texas gardeners in something called Xeriscape Landscaping. This is a type of landscaping that conserves water while protecting the environment. According to the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, this system incorporates seven basic principles to saving water:
- Planning and design
- Soil analysis
- Practical turf areas
- Appropriate plant selection
- Efficient irrigation
- Use of mulches
- Appropriate maintenance

Do Soaker Hoses save water and water roots more efficiently?
the city of LA has asked that we only water our lawns on Monday and Thursday's. I planted some veggies and fruits and thinking about buying a soaker hose so I can at least take care of what I've started. Do these soaker hoses work and save water at the same time?

A soaker hose would work for the vegetables.
If you have fruit trees, use dripline.
I have over 100 trees on dripline, and they do just fine, although my well only produces 4 gallons a minute (not very much).
