Foil Business Cards - Worth The Cost?

Foil business cards stand out.

And having a business card that impresses your prospects, clients and associates is key to the response that it will generate.

After all, a card that fails to make an impression is likely to be lost, forgotten, or worse... disposed of.

Some refer to this as passing "the trash test."

The fact is, there are so many ways to go about passing the trash test. So many different ways to ensure that your card engages someone the minute it's placed in the palm of their hand.

So how do foil business cards stack up?

Well, foil stamped business cards are undoubtedly classier than their standard counterparts. That's because what replaces otherwise typical text, or design, is a shiny, metallic looking coating. And there's just no denying that silver and gold are alluring. In addition to the visual effect, a foil stamped business card can also add texture to an otherwise standard card. That's because the foil is often applied on top of the text, logo, or design, lifting it above the card.

Few would argue -- it's a nice touch. Pardon the pun.

But are foil stamped business cards worth the cost?

As is the case with all business card options, materials, and effects, it really depends on who you are, what you do, and the recipient of your cards. For professional services like attorneys, real estate agents, and designers it might be just what your business card needs to give it a touch of class and exclusivity.

Or you might have a design concept in mind where adding a foil stamp helps you rise above the ordinary. A hair salon, for example, might accent the long flowing hair on its model. Or a pet shop might accent the dog collar around a dog's neck.

Naturally, this requires a certain level of customization that may increase both the cost of the card itself, and the need to hire a designer as well.

For some, the cost of a foil business card is far outweighed by the added impact it generates. Others will find that there's a better way to achieve the same result - whether through a unique business card material like clear plastic, or rounded corners, a fold over card that becomes a content driven mini-brochure, or even a raised ink card which provides a similar textural experience to foil business cards without the shiny look.

It all depends on you.

What's important is that you're taking the time to make sure that your business card ENGAGES people - and creates a lasting impression.

That alone -- however you decide to do it -- puts you head and shoulders above the masses, and ensures your card is a powerful weapon in your marketing arsenal.

If the UK went all one power, what would you choose?

The power sources I offer you are:
• Nuclear, • Coal, • Oil, • Gas, • Solar, • Wind

Give a good argument for your case. Thumbs up to all who give a good reason for their power, especially original answers.

For me I say Nuclear power. It is safe, simple and reliable. People complain about the problems such as Chernobyll and radiation, but did you know that nuclear radiation from the sources inside the plant travel a mere 1metre in air! The radiation can be stopped by mere tin foil. It produces more power than any other plant per km2 used. It is renewable to the extent that is will be available in the entire universe. It is reliable obviously because our Earth is heated by nuclear power. The sun and the core are both nuclear and safe enough. A fire lasting 10 billion years!
I say go nuclear.

What firestarting reply have you to that?

The question belies a fundamental lack of understanding of the problems associated with nuclear power generation, and of power generation in general.

Firstly, to answer your question, I agree with those who answered that electricity generation by one single energy source is a non-starter.

Electricity consumption is set to increase even if we maintain the same demand, as gas supplies dwindle. For this reason alone we need to consider 3 factors:

1) Cost-Benefit Analysis
2) Security of supply
3) Environmental Impacts of generation

So, a two-part answer.

A) Nuclear Power:

.... fails on all 3 counts.

1) The reason why the Thatcher Government - the most pro-nuclear ever in Britain - eventually abandoned the idea of increasing the UK's reliance on nuclear, was that someone blew the whistle on the element the pro-nuclear Thatcherites had left out of the Cost-Benefit Analysis: waste management and decommissioning costs = huge and forever.

Now, I appreciate that you may only be about 12 years old and belong to the "mememe" lobby, but even you must recognise that a Government in a Democracy, has a duty to ensure that future generations do not have to spend ALL of their GDP to maintain massive volumes of highly radioactive nuclear waste dumps that will only be half as radioactive in 24,000 years.... left by their forefathers, long after the Uranium ran out.

2) Nuclear power relies on finite and a non-renewable fuel, which is not produced in the UK and so scarcity or price hikes could lead to possible supply insecurity.

3) Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have informed a generation of anti-nuclear campaigners... (shame you clearly have never heard of either) so the environmental impacts are potentially disastrous.

You claim that the radiation could be stopped by tin foil.... I suggest you go and read-up a little more on radioisotopes, the various kind of radiation different radioisotopes emit and the level of shielding required to make each safe.... Alpha: paper barrier; Beta: aluminium shielding, Beta: thick lead shielding.

Given the failure of the Economy, would YOU like the same thing to be happening to a vast network of nuclear Power stations, just about now? Because, you know, it's the same people who massacred our economy that would be in charge of our Nuclear generation!

B) Renewables:

Wind: Although onshore and offshore wind can supply a considerable proportion of the UK's need, nevertheless this is a variable source and so fails on the security of supply.
Solar: ditto
Tidal: insufficient resources
Wave: ditto (both above)
Geothermal: no UK resources.

SO, the grown-up answer (and I am sorry if this is difficult science for a year 4 pupil) is a combination of:

Capillary microgeneration: onshore wind and photovoltaic, with ground-source heat pumps and solar thermal

Centralised, gigageneration: hydroelectric (mostly Scotland) offshore wind, tidal and wave, with solar farms and large-scale hydrogen production and storage, for H2 FuelCell stacks - also usable in automotive applications.

Sorry diddums, but this can't be answered without using difficult words!
